Candidate Forums

The Voter Services Committee, with support from the membership of the League of Women Voters of Calvert County (LWVCC) and its Outreach Partners, organizes Candidate Forums during election years.  The goal of the forums is to educate voters about the positions held by the candidates running for various offices on the ballot.  LWVCC conducts these forums on a nonpartisan basis and does not support or oppose any political party or candidate.

LWVCC follows a specific set of rules by which candidates who participate in its forums must agree to abide. The 2020 Candidate Forums will be held virtually and streamed via Facebook Live or YouTube.  This will ensure widely-publicized and viewed events where all participants can be safe.  

The forums scheduled for 2020 are:

Calvert County Board of Education Candidates:

The League of Women Voters prohibits unopposed candidates to participate in Candidate Forums.  Therefore, Antoine White and Inez Claggett will not participate in this forum.  Please note that Closing the Gap Coalition will be hosting a town hall for each of the candidates for the Board of Education.  Please click here for more information.

The event will be supported by LWVCC's Outreach Partners and live-streamed via the LWVCC Facebook page. Members may register for the event on our Events/Upcoming Events.  Non-members may view this forum via LWVCC Facebook Live.

Candidate Forum Rules for Board of Education Candidates:

  1. A candidate may not participate in the Forum unless at least one general election opponent also participates, unless running unopposed.
  2. Your participation in this Forum constitutes acknowledgement you cannot use, re-broadcast or print Forum content without permission of the LWV.
  3. No recordings during the Forum are permitted except the LWVCC's Facebook Live recording.
  4. Each candidate must answer the question posed but may choose to use a portion of the allocated time to respond to a previous question.
  5. The first responder to each question and the opening and closing statements will rotate based on a predetermined LWVCC-generated random speaking sequence.
  6. Each candidate will be allowed:
    • Two (2) minutes for an opening statement.
    • One (1) minute to answer each question.
    • Two (2) minutes for a closing statement.
  7. A virtual time clock will display the amount of time the speaker has left.
  8. STOP' will appear when time is up; please end the sentence and stop speaking.
  9. There will be no time allotted for rebuttals.
  10. The moderator may repeat a question, if requested.
  11. The candidates will not interrupt one another and will refrain from personal attacks.
  12. Questions for the candidates will be from LWVCC as well as audience questions screened by LWVCC volunteers.
